My friend John has these in his shade garden. They are gorgeous! I 'need' some in my garden. He showed them of all night saturday. (He had a memorial weekend party)Took groups of people a few at a time to see. I think almost everyone at the party took a look!
These aren't his but thats them! (google image)

Well I'm sure if someone offered me a couple of those pretties, I'm sure I could find a little spot for them.

Hey Wrennie, could they be left in the ground or would they have to be dug up and brought in for the winter?

awww...PINK, I want some pink!!!
I have one sweet little yellow lady,
lawfully ~ I wouldn't want to get caught digging those out of the wild!!!!

I think I seen four to a group on ebay for 25.00. Thats where I found mine....the guy I bought from was just great....He's even written a few plant books, one of which was only Hawiian Tropicals...guy seems to do traveling alot.

Anyhow, I really like the fact that my plant came with the two soil additives they needed to grow....mine is just now showing it's slipper~~ but I'm still waiting for the top bud cover to lift a wee bit higher. Better get my camera ready.

hi, Lady slippers are hardy to zone 3 I think and they are native to the northeast. they often grow in peat bogs and they need very well drained soil. thats what I've found out so far anyway not 100%sure on the accuracy of that info though.

In Maine, Lady slippers are found wild, and they are an endangered species, so no picking or digging up, could get in big trouble. We found several out back of our property a few years ago, and I was tempted, mind you it IS our property, but on second thought, I left them alone. They grow every year I go and visit them. I will try and get a picture, but it's pretty dark in them there woods.

hugs, Nancy~

Just a quick note:
The root I bought (for onr plant) was about 18 inches long and planted horizontal....doesn't sound easy to dig up and .....and thats a big AND, it came with two soil additives for the growing site. So, I believe I wouldn't move any of these without knowing what the ground comp. was, they seem to be selective of their sites.

there was an article about lady slippers on the NHGC wbsite today.

here's a link http://www.gardeningclub.com/Projects/Project.aspx?id=142770
they hardy to zone 2 so you don't need to dig them. they need very well drained soil so digging them isn't a good idea because I'm sure thats what the soil additives are for.

ok have a good day!

I decided not to disturb them anyway. Im sure you're right about what they like for soil and Marie, I would not have known it had such a root system, I would have probably dug right down straight and killed it anyway.
No, Id much rather go visit them where they like to live.

hugs, Nancy~
