When ya buy it in the store it's usually waxed. I read waxing tho can hold mold or rot against the skin & they spoil faster. How long can I leave them in the ground for?

Sorry, Wrennie, I have never had rutabaga. What is it like? So, they wax some veggies to try and make them last longer? I have wondered why.

Yes, I buy them every year for Thanksgiving for my dad and brothers although I can't stand them.
I generally just cube it and cook like a potato; used to mash them but the boys said they like them cubed so it saves me a step.
