| I would love to keep track of my garden's progress, so I thought I'd start a thread It's actually doing much better than I thought it would do! April 17 2009 April 27 2009 May 6 2009 - taken from the deck since it's raining! I made some changes to the supports for the peas. | |

| Thank you! I put the walkway in because I realized I'm too short to reach the center of the bed! It's worked out well so far. | |

| Yea, that's why I've got the raised bed now. Elijah LOVED all the rocks I pulled out of the yard when I tried to dig the garden last year. I have had a lot of success container gardening. It's wonderful when you don't have a lot of space. I used my 10x10 deck the first year we lived in the house and wound up with a lot of veggies. | |

| I love your garden, I haven't been able to start mine yet. Hopefully, this weekend Im going to get started. But, it's been cold and rainy again. We just can't catch a break up here in Maine. In years past, I have had good luck with container gardening, too.

| two yrs ago i did my zuchinni and summer squash in large window boxes on a small round table. they did wonderful i had tons of squash. one day i came out and the weight of the squash hanging made the pots fall over smack upside down on the ground. i was devistated. so lesson learned make sure there is ample room to have the fruits sit on the table not over the edge. here is a picture or two of the container plants i had luck with. It is true what they say though on planting tomatoes in the same place/pot i had terrible luck the next yr doing them in the same dirt. this year im cleaning out the pots and putting in fresh soil. look at the amount of flowers i had on the zucchini and yellow summer squash on that table that yr last yr i decided to plant the zuchinni in the ground and they were horrible. the rabbits ate every flower bud i got. i manage to grow two squash all season. i am definatly going back to the pots this yr. first yr tomato plants second yr in the same pots...not good | |

| Daaaaaayummmmm Kathy! Thats a loa of zucchini blooms! Wow. Crop rotation is important! So either change the soil or grow something very different in them the second year. Crop specific pests and disease can stay in the pots. Wash them well too, with some bleach to kill the ickys. Another problem with the pots is the soil can get very tamped down/compact in there. loosen it up well if re-using. | |

| Wrennie, I think they're a bush variety... I put the support up mainly because I've had plants in the past that say "doesn't need support!" and I wind up having to try and rig something up when the full grown plants start taking over because they DON'T have support! I haven't grown beans before, so I'm hoping they do okay. It's time for a new picture today I think! | |

| Kim, beans are so easy to grow you'll be doing them again next year I bet. I grow enough to blanch, vacuum seal, and freeze for a year. Your garden looks good & I'll be checking back to see how it does. Hope you have a great gardening season! | |

| Thank you! What we did, was put layers of newspaper down over the old garden, which was just a area of grass removed from the yard. Scott built the raised bed, put down the newspaper, and then put the soil in over it. We're going to do the same thing with Elijah's pumpkin patch this summer. | |

| Oh yes... any of my future gardens will have layers of newspaper as a base! I'm thinking about redoing the beds around the house, since the previous neighbors decided that adding a mulch of pea gravel would be a good idea. I HATE IT! I'm thinking about removing all the gravel, and adding higher perimeters, then newspaper + soil. | |

| Today's photo! 5/20/2009 I still have NO carrots at all, so I moved one of my 4 baby zucchini plants over to that patch, and moved another one to the empty middle mound. I should have lots of zucchini this summer! | |
